Your photos are amazing. Your portfolio is beautiful. But no one can find it. That’s the problem.
You need SEO. SEO helps people find you on Google. This guide makes SEO simple for photographers. Use these three easy steps. Get more clients.
Step 1: Use The Right Words. (Keywords)
Your clients use specific words to search. Find those words. Use them on your website.
Do not use general words like “photographer.” Be specific.
What you do + Your City: “Wedding photographer in Austin.” “Family photographer in Seattle.”
Be Even More Specific: “Outdoor maternity photographer near me.” “Affordable senior portrait photographer.”
How to do it:
Think like your client. What would they type into Google?
Put those words on your website. On your homepage. On your service pages.
Make your page titles clear. “Denver Wedding Photography | Your Name.”
This tells Google who you help.
Step 2: Fix Your Photos. (Image SEO)
Google cannot see your photos. You must tell Google what they are. Most photographers miss this. It’s easy.
Do these three things for every image:
File Name: Change “IMG_1234.jpg” to “sunset-beach-wedding-couple-miami.jpg”.
Alt Text: Describe the photo. “Bride and groom laughing during sunset portrait on Miami Beach by [Your Name].”
Make Files Smaller: Use a free tool like Smush. Small files make your site faster. Google likes fast sites.
This helps your photos show up in Google Images. That brings more people to your site.

Step 3: Own Your City. (Local SEO)
Your clients are local. You need to show up on Google Maps.
The most important thing: Your Google Business Profile.
It’s free. Make it perfect.
Fill it out completely. Add your photos, address, hours, and services.
Ask for reviews. Happy clients? Ask them to leave a review on your Google page.
Post updates. Share your latest work there.
Also, make sure your name, address, and phone number are the same everywhere online.
Write for Your Clients. (Blogging)
Help your clients. Answer their questions on your blog.
Write posts like:
“What to Wear for Your Engagement Photos”
“5 Questions to Ask Your Wedding Photographer”
“A Guide to Newborn Photo Sessions in [Your City]”
This makes you an expert. It helps you rank higher.
Your Simple Start List:
Pick 3 keyword phrases. Use “service + city.”
Optimize 10 photos. Rename files and add alt text.
Fix your Google Business Profile. Add photos and ask for 1 review.
Write 1 helpful blog post.
Start today. Do one thing. SEO is a long-term plan. But it works.
